When is the best time for cruising to Alaska? That is a question I get asked often. Unfortunately, it is one that isn’t quite as easy to answer as other locations. Today, we are going to explore some of the advantages of each month while cruising to Alaska.
First, let me say that if you are on an Alaskan cruise it is a good time to cruise to Alaska. Basically, there are 5 months you can choose from to sail, although the shoulder seasons will have fewer dates. We are going to look at each of those months and hopefully narrow down what you are most hoping to see and experience as you are cruising to Alaska. Keep in mind this is just a guide and weather and wildlife can be unpredictable. If something is listed in a particular month it does not guarantee you will see it. It does, however, give you a better opportunity to see it while cruising to Alaska.
May
May is one of those shoulder months we spoke about. You may find fewer dates available, but they probably will be cheaper. May is also a dry month in Alaska. You may spot some smaller wildlife like mountain goats, sheep, or even some black bears. The negative thing about May is it may still be quite cool.
June
In June the weather is warming up and you are getting longer days. June is considered a dry month. Denali typically opens mid-June. Berries begin to ripen, huge salmon attract plenty of bears. The downfall of June is we are getting into peak time so prices (and crowds) will increase. Because of the warmer weather, the bugs will increase as well.
July
The weather is really heating up in July, it may even be hot at times. July brings an increase in rainfall. You still have the opportunity to see bears. July is also a great time for fishing. July is peak time so prices are high and the crowds are high.
August
Berry season is at the peak for picking. The salmon are still attracting the bears. If you are looking for fishing August brings great pink and silver salmon. Although Alaska is slowing down it can still be expensive during August. While cruising to Alaska in August expect rain, it is around a 50% chance in August.
September
September brings another shoulder month. Due to the quietness and lower prices, September is arguably the best time for cruising to Alaska. You also have the best chance to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. September brings cooler weather, with high chances of rain.
