For the past few years it has been lingering in the back of many travelers minds, what is the REAL ID? Will I need a passport? When will this all go into effect? Hopefully, I can help you answer some of those questions. First, the current, updated map from the DHS website.
So let’s talk about what this map means, it is current as of February 21, 2020
Yellow States:
If your state is yellow, it means the state has been granted an extension. This extension doesn’t really affect you as a traveler. It is an extension for when the STATE has to be offering Real IDs. That means the state has until the extension date to prove compliance. After that date, if they have become compliant you can see the green state information below. If they have not become compliant DHS may grant another extension, if they do not grant another extension you will need another form of approved identification, such as a passport, to travel.
Common Questions for the Yellow States:
What if my license has a star but is still listed yellow?
- Until the state is approved by DHS the license is still not REAL ID compliant
When will we know if the state is compliant?
- Unfortunately, all we can do is continue checking. If you are flying soon after the extension time is up, keep monitoring closely. You may want to consider getting a passport or another form of ID as the date gets closer.
Green States:
If your state is green, it means the state is compliant and can issue a REAL ID. This does not mean that the ID you currently hold is a REAL ID. To obtain a REAL ID you will need to provide the required documentation, you can find out what your state requires by going to your state’s OMV/DMV website.
Common Questions for the Green States:
How do I know if I hold a REAL ID?
- A REAL ID driver’s license or identification card will display a star or other distinguishing mark.
- You will know that you brought in the extra documentation to receive it.
My license is not expired, do I need to go get a new one?
- No, if your state is compliant you can keep your current license until it is time to renew. EVERYONE will have to have either a REAL ID or another form of compliant ID such as a Passport to fly after October 1, 2020.
Do I have to get a REAL ID?
- No, many states have made the REAL ID optional, but what this does mean is you will be required to have another form of identification (such as a passport) to fly and enter federal buildings.
- Other accepted forms of identification can be found here.
Keep in mind that a REAL ID will still not permit you to enter into another country. Passports are king and I always recommend traveling with one.
I hope I have answered many of your REAL ID questions; if you have any that weren’t answered let me know in the comments. Keep checking back as I will update with information as it becomes available.
